Cenaduria Chayito- Restaurant Review

Submitted by Manzanillo Blogger on Monday, 29 September 20083 Comments

Tucked away on a small street in Salagua is another gem of a restaurant you won't want to miss! The name is Cenaduria Chayito, and they are something of a local favorite. 'Cenaduria' is a word used in Mexico to describe the small and charming home style restaurants we have hidden away in Manzanillo's neighborhoods. This place definitely lives up to its name, with some of the best local food you can find.

They open their doors every evening at around 7PM. By 10PM the place is generally packed with happy hungry locals waiting for some of the famous Pozolé or Dulce Enchiladas. I've always been fond of restaurants where the menu is on the wall. It shows confidence in their food. It says "This is what we have, it's so good we painted it on the wall, and we don't plan on changing any time soon."

As I mentioned, their Pozolé is among the best I've ever had, and they are famous in the area for it. Pozolé is a traditional Mexican soup or stew made from Hominy. Think chicken noodle soup with a Mexico twist. At Chayito they have three different varieties of Pozolé. We are very fond of the 'Pozolé especial.' You start with a steaming dish of hamony, chicken, and chicken broth. Then you mix in freshly sliced radish, onion, lettuce, lime, and a splash of homemade salsa. Delicious! This soup costs only 40 pesos, and is enough to share.

Their enchiladas are incredible as well. If you are adventurous you can get them 'dulce' which means sweet. Or if you don't want it just ask for 'enchiladas no dulce.' You can get a variety of meats in them, and an order of six is only 36 pesos. They are a hit every time!

Chayito is located in the Salagua neighborhood. You take the main boulevard, Miguel de la Madrid, and turn at the stop light that takes you into the Salagua square where you find HSBC and Nextel. There is a big green sign at the stop light that points into Salagua with Salahua and an arrow written on it (an alternate spelling I guess). Drive straight after you turn off the bouelvard, count two streets on the right, and then turn right. You will find Cenaduria Chayito on the right hand side of the street. Remember they don't open tell 7PM. Buen Provecho!

I’m told the Negra Modelo cerveza at 18 pesos a bottle is among the cheapest you can get in Manzanillo. Considering that at the distributor a bottle costs 9 pesos, this is a good deal too.

But that is just what I’ve heard… may be worth investigating.

BTW… I think Tuesday is their “decansamos” (their day off).
