Trader Joe’s in Manzanillo- Delicias Gourmet
Our favorite grocery store has always been Trader Joe’s. When we lived in New York, we would take two trains at rush hour to Union Square 14th St, about an hours commute from our apartment in Brooklyn, just so we could shop at the only Trader Joe’s in the city. We loved the natural, organic, exotic, and unique foods that could be found there. And in a city famous for expensive luxuries you couldn’t beat their price either. If you do not have one of these stores where you live in the US or Canada, then you should move into a different area. It’s that good.
Since our move to Manzanillo, Mexico, one of the only things we actually miss is our favorite Trader Joes. We find ourselves anxiously awaiting the arrival of friends and visitors, in part because we love having them visit and showing them this amazing place, but mostly because they bring such nice presents from places like Trader Joes! (just kidding.. or am I?) I’m sure this experience is not unique to us.
The Wait Is Over
All our desires have been fulfilled. Our very own Trader Joe’s has come to Manzanillo! Ok not the actual Trader Joes franchise, but the man who owns this store is named José! Coincidence? I think not. The new store is called Delicias Gourmet, they are located in the little mall behind Subway, near to OfficeMax, next to the new Juega y Juega Casino. Delicias Gourmet has so many neat things packed into such a small space it is unbelievable.
The Amazing Deli
This deli is unlike anything we’ve seen since coming to Mexico. Among many other things they have amazing healthy Mexican food, Pastrami sandwiches, Mexican cheese, yellow cheddar cheese, and gourmet deserts. The most exciting menu item to us is the Arabian Taco, or Shawarma to the rest of you. It comes with Lamb, Chicken, or even vegetarian Falafel! The food is made by a Jordanian woman, and the ingredients are imported from all over to bring the authentic taste we know and love. Never thought you’d get Falafel in Mexico did you? We will be reviewing the food soon, so stay tuned.
The Grocery
Trader José and his wife run Delicias. The most exciting feature of Delicias Gourmet is their grocery aisles. They import interesting foods directly from the States, and other areas in Mexico. The shelves are lined with great items you won’t find anywhere else in Manzanillo. And the prices are incredibly reasonable. Don’t see something you want? You can request it, and you will have it within a week or two! It beats eating chicken and rice all week! You only have to pay a small markup of 10-15% due to the import taxes. No more waiting months for your friends to bring you your favorite ingredients, now the fine owners of Delicias Gourmet will go and get it for you! We have given this grocery store the honorary title of “Manzanillo’s Own Trader José’s”. Check out our review of the Manzanillo Delicias Deli Restaurant.
But don’t take our word for it, see for yourself!
