Panaderia La Espiga de Oro- Manzanillo’s Best Bakery!
It is a bread lovers dream… The scent of baking bread is overwhelming. A fresh loaf is pulled from the oven, golden and steaming. The walls are lined with shelves of pastries, doughnuts, and rolls that make the strongest willpower melt.
This is the sight that greets you as you step in the doors of Santiago’s local family owned bakery Panaderia La Espiga de Oro. Literally, The Golden Ear (of wheat). Early every morning they fire up their brick oven and are sold out usually by 10:30am, so you better get there early. They bake about 1000 loaves a day plus pastries as supply for various Salagua abarrotes (corner grocery stores). However, they take walk-in orders as well. They even accept special orders for the next day. Our friend special ordered hamburger buns yesterday and promptly picked them up today, delicious and steaming. This tasty treat won’t set you back too much either, each loaf is 8 pesos (roughly 80 cents USD), and English is spoken. The loaves are amazing to eat just with butter, but they also are excellent for appetizers, sandwiches, or French Toast.
We hope the pictures will help you recognize the Panaderia (Bakery). It is tucked neatly into the Santiago neighborhood. If you take the main boulevard, Miguel de la Madrid, heading north towards the Miramar beach, look for the giant tope (speedbump) in Santiago before Juanito’s. Once you get there take your first right after the tope. This street is called Carranza, although a street sign is not very conspicuous. Follow it all the way down and you will eventually see the bakery on your left While a little hard to find, it’s well worth the effort!

I am so looking forward to trying this when I get back there. You are letting out Manzanillo’s secrets! Good for you guy’s
Has anybody else found a bakery they liked in the area? Or a specific kind of pastry that is good? Back in Brooklyn they had this little Mexican sweetbread bakery. We got addicted to a certain kind of sweetbread they made with red sugar on top when it was fresh out of the oven. It was just across the street from a Dominican coffe shop. You can imagine how well the two went together.
I was able to find it the other day and the loaves I bought were still warm. The bread was very good but, I thought, a little bit pricey for the size of the loaf compared to other places in town where the bread isn’t quite as good. I also bought a few croissants which were good and had a very slight sweetness to them.
The young man who helped me was very friendly and spoke enough English that it was very easy to communicate with him.
Thanks for the tip! I am a very finicky eater and it is nice to be able to add another vendor to my very short list.
We love the bread guy. We featured him in our video:

Ah, Manzanillo. I’m sold on this place.
well, it took me a while to get there, but i finally arrived at their nice little panaderia. and yes, you’ll end up paying more for a piece of bread comapared to the prices they offer at the big box stores, but their bread is worth every penny, i meant pesos! they offer high quality.
they have a great selection of breads from croisants, muffins, chocolate breads, burger buns (yes!), and mexican favorites like the conchas and el ‘pan del muerto’.
i enjoyed their fresh, baked right out the oven ‘bolillo’ loaf and actually had a great sandwich meal with it! their cinnamon rolls were pretty good too!
ps. the young man at the bakery is very nice, and actually spoke decent english. now that’s very rare to find in manzanillo and the quality of service is excellent.
i shall visit that bakery again sometime!
