Flu Season… even in Mexico
So the weather here is changing. Winter is upon us in Manzanillo. That means the nights are a chilly 60 F degrees, it also means the Snow Birds from up North are making their yearly migration to their vacation homes here. In addition to the temperature, Winter is also the dry season for Manzanillo. No rain for the next 6 months. You can imagine how dusty and poluted the air will be getting, especially with all the burning that goes on at some times of the year.
Put all this together and you get the makings for some nasty flu and cold viruses that tend to go around. Some people swear by a shot of vitamin T before bed (the T stands for Tequilla of course!), they say it keeps them healthy and kills whatever is trying to grow in them. These past couple days I have started feel something coming on as well, so I am going to take one for the team and test this out.
Here is a recipe for the best flu medicine you will ever take. I found it on Mexico Today Blog:
- A cup of boiling water (I mean it, boiling. Dont´be lazy, boil it, no microwave please!)
- A shot of wiskey or bourbon. I am sure tequila would work.
- Squeeze some lime or lemon.
- Sugar to taste (half to one teaspoon)
- Add a thin slice of orange...and
- Drink drink drink...
- You will sleep like a baby
In addition to this, here in Manzanillo there is a local remedy to "la Gripa" (the flu/cold in Spanish). It is their version of Chicken Noodle Soup- a hot cup of delicious beef broth soup called Consomé. It is delicious and warms your very soul with home cooked goodness. What is your remedy for the flu?

Your drink concoction is affectionately called a “hot toddy.” I’m originally from Minnesota and we would use a “hot toddy” to warm us up and cure what ailed. Oddly enough, there is even a wikipedia entry about them:

My mother would be, and is, proud of you for reminding us about the time-honored medical “treatment” in the article.
It is kind of like the old grandmother of Hebrew descent that when asked about the benefits of chicken soup replied, “It may not help but it couldn’t hoit!”
well, that beats buying flu medicines all the time! ‘hierba buena’ tea 8or any tea for the matter! i just love the taste of hierba buena) is good to soften your sore throat.
That recipe sounds nice.. Thanks for sharing..
