Salt Factories Of Cuyutlan

Submitted by Manzanillo Blogger on Tuesday, 30 September 20082 Comments

Just twenty minutes south of Manzanillo is the town of Cuyutlan. Cuyutlan is, among other things, home to the famous olas verde, or green wave. It is a wave that breaks at a reported 20-30 feet in height on a regular basis. At the nearby beach of Pascuales they regularly host world class surf tournaments. Bruce and Andy Irons along with other surfing legends have attended these tournaments in the past. But that is a story for another time (and a field trip!).

Along the road to Cuyutlan, you will drive through a vast salt flat. One of Cuyutlans major exports and sources of employment is salt production. I found a recent post on the blog Mexico Living that I thought you all would enjoy. Below is an excerpt from it. You can read the rest here.

...Soon we were driving south, following the eastern shore of the Cuyutlán Lagoon, a shallow salt lake many miles in length.

A tiny settlement of shacks roofed with palm thatch caught my eye. I yelled "Paul!" (Paul was driving. Note to self: avoid riding with drivers who exhibit signs of advanced ADD.) "Paul! Stop! Right here!"

SW12

Backbreaking work, this. The temperature is around 100º and the humidity is near 100%. Small but tough men haul filled bags away, to be sealed closed and loaded onto a truck headed for Aguascalientes, whose epicurean residents provide demand for hand-harvested sea salt. This is the world-famous Sal Coronita (Corenet brand salt). ...

I think that blogger was on the north side of the lagoon. Cuyutlan is on the south side and they have a very well done salt museum there east of the center part of town. Right next door to the salt museum is a salt warehouse and we have watched them bag salt right there in the street.
