Kiosko Or Oxxo?
Kiosko and Oxxo convenience stores are on almost every corner, on almost every street, in almost every neighborhood in Manzanillo. They seem to sprout up overnight, just add water and watch them grow. Often you will find both a Kiosko and an Oxxo directly across the street from each other silently waging a war for your business. In fact, with a few exceptions, they both basically provide exactly the same products. And yet the people of Manzanillo will swear by one, and avoid the other like the plague. Why?
So this is it. It's your time to speak out. Which do you prefer- Kiosko or Oxxo? Cast your votes, and our trained staff of 'Genuine Manzanillo Blue Sailfish' will tally the results. Let us know why in the comments!

While the stores are similar, there are subtle differences. I prefer Oxxo for three reasons:
1) Often they have a clean rest room,
2) If you forget to get lemons, or tomatoes, or chiles, or an onion, you can get it at Oxxo without having to go to the market,
3) It is the only place you can get the beer Casta. Mmm, mmm good.
Kiosko has none of those so far.
I prefer Kiosko as they are the only ones with local papers. I normally
buy my papers at a local abarrote, but sometimes I have to go to Kiosko
for El Correo and El Noticiero. OXXO doesn’t carry either one.
There’s nothing in either that would make me open the door…god next we’ll have 7 Eleven’s on every corner.
Please…

Should be a neither vote as well

There you go my… sailfish riding… jungle dwelling… fisherman friend. A neither choice just for you. Sweet gravatar by the way.
So you are a abarote guy all the way then?
I wouldn’t really want to get into all the changes in ZLO, but suffice to say I picked this beautiful place despite the lack of Wallmart, Starbucks, Kiosko, Oxxo, Pizza huts etc…
I could give a full vent, but…well that’s for a different topic
Give me a beautiful (or not) person selling local produce in the back streets of Santiago and that’s all I need (want). If I want the rest I can fly back to the rat race.

personally love the oxxo. only place in manzanillo you can get Rockstars. yes i know i know they are horrible for you but im a growing kid i need some of the bad stuff once in a while.
One of my close friends owns/operates an abarrote in Santiago. When Wal-Mart was being built (and I am NOT a fan of Wal-Mart due to dealing with them in my past life…) I asked him if he thought it would affect his business. His reply?
“No, not much.” His reason was quite interesting. I learned then that the local abarrotes extend credit to the neighbors. They can come and get items, he puts down the items and the value on their page in his notebook. At the end of the month, or so, they (are supposed to) bring him the balance.
Neat arrangement. A true neighborhood in every sense of the word. It isn’t a perfect system, but it is more friendly. You certainly can’t get friendly credit at an Oxxo, Kiosko, or Wal-Mart.
Like “Tarzan” I do try to use an abarrote when I can to support the local economy. Before Soriana came (about 8 years ago I think…) the biggest store in Santiago was the abarrote across the street from Santander Bank and Antojitos Lulu. People from Vida del Mar came to that abarrote to shop. Amazing changes in such a short period of time. Not all for the better… but we are managing.
i like kiosko better ’cause they carry out lower prices in comparison to oxxo. at this rate, they most likely will carry out 7-11.
as for walmart, there’s good news for anti-walmart shoppers everywhere. soriana is starting to kick butt again by getting the store super clean, their products was neatly set and offered alot of discounts (there soriana brand liquid detergent cost around $17 vs walmart’s great value brand 20-something pesos) and offering good deals with the card. you get electronic money on your card depending on the product’s promotion of the day.
for the ladies out there, they were selling alot of decent looking women’s clothes with great discounts, outside the soriana.
if you’re hungry, try out the burgers they serve at their resteraunt (inside the soriana supermarket right next to the bakery), for a great cheese burger with natural fries, you get the whole deal for about 20 pesos. that beats bk all the way! and the best part is…it was soooo goood and i was stuffed for half the day.
Crazy4Manzanillo, can i call you C4M for short? That’s next months poll. But shhhh keep it a secret.

This is like asking which do you like better, the plague or famine. Has anyone ever asked who is making all the money on these blights of what was once small and charming manzanillo
Oxxo/Kiosko Vs Abarrotes
It’s all about lighting. Oxxo and Kiosko are well lit - super lit - all the kids gravitate to them at night like bugs around a street lamp. Hardly ecological and must cost a fortune - but it works - just like Las Vegas.
Most Abarrotes are just too dark and too difficult to find anything - I have to go back to my car for a torch so I can find the little glass coke bottles…well almost….
