Dredging and Port Work In Manzanillo
Recently one of our regular contributors Howard Platt sent in this very nice picture of one of the boats at work on the Manzanillo Port Expansion project. He also sent this article along with the picture from November 2008 about the planned expansion:
This is a news article from last year from "Dredging News Online"
Major Mexican contract awarded to Jan de Nul
News - November 3, 2008
Mexicana De Dragados SA de CV, the Mexican branch of the Jan De Nul Group, has signed a contract with the port authorities of the Mexican Pacific ports of Ensenada, Mazatlan and Manzanillo for dredging work at the ports.
Signed on October 24th, the contract has a total value of Euros 48 million.
In Ensenada, 1.5 million m³ will be dredged from the access channel and the turning basin using a large trailing suction hopper dredger.
In Mazatlan 150,000 m³ will be dredged and deposited offshore for the
repositioning of the API quays. Of the total volume, 90,000m³ is very hard material and requires a powerful cutter suction dredger. The Manzanillo scope mainly consists of the deforestation, excavation and reclamation of terrain which will be used for an extension of the container terminal at the port. A total volume of 4.3 million m³ will be moved.
The work in Manzanillo also includes widening the access channel, dredging in front of the berths and salvage of a barge.
The picture depicts the trailing suction hopper dredger "James Cook" that has just completed the work in Ensenada and is now at work in Manzanillo. The photo shows it taking another load out to dump at sea this afternoon.
We don't have any more recent news on the port expansion, though from what we can see the work is continuing at a decent pace down in the Las Brisas area. If one of our readers is more knowledgeable on the subject, perhaps they would like to update everybody on what has been going on down there in the comments.
