Apple iPhone in Mexico
We just returned from vacation in the San Fransisco Bay area. While there I fell in love with Apple's new iPhone. It seemed that almost everybody we knew had this little dream gadget, and used it constantly. The new iPhone is immensely useful, especially with the unlimited data plan that AT&T offers for something like $30 extra a month. It has GPS, unlimited access to the internet, tons of applications to assist you, a decent built in camera, even word processing. Basically, it is a small computer that does just about everything an average user could need.
One of our recent visitors decided to leave his laptop at home and just bring his smart phone because the laptop was "too heavy." With newer, smarter, and more connected phones we are going to see a big change in how people travel and stay connected.
After using it for just two weeks I didn't know how I could live without, but I would have to. Indeed the iPhone hit the Mexican market in July, but the price for data plans with Telcel were abhorrent. Initially, Telcel didn't even offer an unlimited data plan, they were charging 800 pesos a month with a cap of just 200 Megabytes. The Mexican public was in an outrage as the price combined with the overage charges of about 40 pesos a Megabyte would break just about anyone's bank. In response, Telcel now offers an unlimited data plan for a mere 1300 pesos a month. The plan includes unlimited data, 600 minutes, and 300 text messages. A similar plan with ATT costs about $90-$100 USD.
The price gap is is very difficult for many here to swallow. I have no idea how good the 3G network is here, and I have yet to see anybody using an iPhone in Manzanillo. Which isn't to say nobody is. However, I'm sure that pretty soon we are going to be seeing more and more Mexicans tapping away at the touch screen on their new Apple iPhone.
Be carefull if you are coming from the States and want to use your iPhone in Mexico. It will work, however you might have a mild myocardial infarction when you see your cellphone bill.

that’s mexico for ya, always bringing the american products at unbearable prices.
this also shows how the country devides the poor with the rich, making an iphone consumer look extremly rich when considering the price you pay to get one, and extremly poor for not being able to afford one.
that’s one thing i don’t like about mexico.
