In Defense of Mexico- Finally Some Good Press
We are obviously very impartial to our wonderful amazing jewel city. How could we not be?
So we try to put good information about Mexico on the internet, because it is much deserved and needed to counteract all the bad press the country has been getting as of late. It's easy to feel as if that's all Mexico gets now days, bad headlines. So, we thought we would highlight some of the good press elsewhere on the net right now.
On Perspective-
This one particularly echoes our sentiments. It is a journalist from New York, which is where we moved here from. I definitely have to agree that I feel more safe here then I did in the Big Apple.
"Too much of the noise you're hearing about how dangerous it is to come to Mexico is just that - noise. But the media love noise, and too many journalists currently making it don't live here. Some have never even been here. They just like to be photographed at night, standing near a spotlighted border crossing... It looks good on TV....The recent rise in violence in Mexico has mostly occurred in a few states, and especially along the border. It is real, but it does not describe an entire country.... despite what I'm getting from the U.S. media, the 24-hour news networks in particular, I feel as safe here as I do at home in New York, possibly safer. I go where I want (which does not happen to include bars where prostitution and drugs are the basic products), and take no more precautions than I would at home in New York; which is to say I don't wave money around, I don't act the Ugly American, I do keep my eyes open, I'm aware of my surroundings, and I try not to behave like a fool...It would be nice if we could put what's going on in Mexico in perspective, geographically and emotionally"

The Numbers-
"A new study published this week by RE/MAX Investment Properties indicates that major tourist zones in Mexico are up to 26 times safer than some tourist zones in the United States"
-Via the Guadalajara Reporter
Granted, there is a drug war waging on in Mexico, but did you know that as of September 2008, in the United States, there are approximately 1,000,000 gang members and up to 80% of crime in various communities is carried out by criminal gangs? Those numbers are straight from the US Department of Justice.
And yet in 2007 "Canadians logged 1,019,000 visits to Mexico, spending 11,146,000 nights there."
source: Statistics Canada.
Life in Mexico-
Another thing we appreciate is how much effort the government puts into infrastructure, and not just the tourist spots, but all over the country, throughout the neighborhoods and residential areas.
"President Felipe Calderón seems committed to allocating funds for new and expanded roads, ports, and telecommunication infrastructure. This goes hand in hand with increased privatization, which will allow concessions in the national airport network and the telecommunications sector. The idea is that all of those improvements will further encourage and facilitate commerce. "
"Everyone seems to agree: the quality of your life improves when you live in Mexico. Things take longer…so you'll need to learn to slow down. Goods and services cost less…so you can afford the kinds of luxuries only the very wealthy enjoy up north."
"Every medium and large city in Mexico has at least one first-rate hospital. A big plus is the cost of health care in Mexico is generally one-half or less what you might pay in the U.S. The same goes for prescription drugs. Those manufactured in Mexico cost, on average, about 50% less than the same drugs in the U.S. You will find that, in general, health care in Mexico is very good…and in many places it is excellent. Most doctors and dentists in Mexico received at least part of their training in the U.S. (And many U.S. doctors have trained in Mexico, notably in Guadalajara.) Many continue to go to the U.S. or Europe for ongoing training."- International Living
