Chayos A Great Family Owned Restaurant

Submitted by Manzanillo Blogger on Tuesday, 10 March 2009One Comment

There is something comforting about family run restaurants. Something that reminds you that the big guys don't always win. Chayo is a seasonally open restaurant that has been serving their brand of home cooked Mexican since 1978. You can taste the perfecting of recipes that the food has become. Everything was delicious and thoughtful.

You can find Chayo on your way out to the airport in a town called El Naranjo. After passing two overpasses, you can spot the sign on the right hand side. The family spends almost as much time gardening the grounds as they do cooking. Hundreds of beautiful plants flourish the edges of the open air structure, and soft lighting and nice music at night makes for a pleasant ambiance, that dulls the sound of the nearby traffic from the road.

Sangria was served in a unique formation, limonada on the bottom, sangria on the top. How they seperated it, we don't know, but it's wonderful anyways. Homemade soups are available and we particularly enjoyed the Tortilla Soup. It was made with a hearty broth, home made tortilla strips, shredded chicken, and gooey cheesey goodness. The Super Mexican Plate entree will give you a broad taste of most of the classics- Chile Relleno- stuffed with meat and cheese, enchiladas, two kinds of tacos, and melt in your mouth ribs. We would definitely recommend this plate. If that's too much food for you, go with the ribs or chile rellenos.

Service was great with a hello from the family whom we are on a first name basis with. The mother has taught her grown daughters the trade and they all help out during the on season. The place is often patroned by gringos on their way to the airport, or just returning for their yearly visit. Its great to have a place to rely on year after year for great food. It's also a great place to take your visiting friends to for an introduction into real Mexican dining. 5 people ate here for under $700 pesos- can't beat that! They are open 6 days a week, with Thursday being their descanso (day off), from 12 -10pm. If only they did breakfast!
