Best Fish Tacos In Manzanillo

Submitted by Manzanillo Blogger on Wednesday, 4 March 20095 Comments

In Manzanillo, tacos are a main food group. They don't have a food pyramid here- they have a taco pyramid. You can get tacos here in more styles than you have fingers and toes. Almost all of them are delicious.

*note- We say "almost" because we still haven't gotten up the courage to eat any of the Tacos de Cabeza, or head tacos, that are so popular in this region of Mexico.

We are big fans of the food here, especially the fresh fish. And if Manzanillo does two things right it's fresh fish and of course... fresh tacos. It's only natural that the two would combine into a mouth watering sinfonía de sazon (symphony of flavor). Now, there are many places to get fish tacos in this city and it's truly hard to go wrong anywhere you end up. However, if you want a truly amazing culinary masterpiece, then you've just got to try our favorite fish taco stand in all of Manzanillo.

You can find this little inconspicuous stand next to the famous Tianguis (Saturday Market) in Santiago. It's on the North side, just along the boulevard. The stand has been there for years, and it is run by a very friendly older couple. They make the tacos in the Baja style. This means the fish is fresh, lightly battered and fried. You top the taco with a homemade coleslaw and various other salsas. Beware, they like it hot in the Baja, and these salsas range from hot to scorching. Be sure to sprinkle the taco with just a little bit of the fresh sea salt that comes from the Cuyutlan region, and don't pass up the "secret sauce" which is basically thousand island... without the islands...

She puts two huge strips of freshly fried fish on top of two tortillas, if you are tricky you will split them up and make two tacos for the price of one. She also serves shrimp tacos, and will cook up enough to cater a party if you give her a days notice. The price for both is just 12 pesos a taco, or just over .60 US. As our friends say it will be a fiesta en su boca (party in your mouth), one that will bring you back again and again.

Excuse me, now that my mouth is watering, I've got somewhere to go. See you there!

These are my favorite fish and shrimp tacos! I’ve had a lot of different ones around town in the last five years, but I keep coming back here. Guadalupe and Pépe make a great team and they are very personable.

drool. I haven’t had a fish taco in years, and we don’t even get corn tortillas here (sob!). I might have to come for a visit. You have a hammock or something over there, right?

You are not qualified to write about food until you develop an adult palate. Go get some Tacos de Cabeza… then write again.
