Boca De Iguanas- Hotel Review

Submitted by Manzanillo Blogger on Monday, 19 January 2009One Comment

We recently had the pleasure of staying at the fantastic eco-friendly resort of Boca de Iguanas. It truly was a delight! Boca de Iguanas is set in the ethereal locale of Tenacatita bay just about an hour north of the Manzanillo airport, close to La Manzanilla and Barra de Navidad. The resort holds true to the laid back Mexican style, with its calm setting, friendly and attentive staff, and relaxing amenities. We really can't say enough how much we enjoyed it, but we're going to try!

Accommodations

The rooms were very spacious and comfortable. In addition to the king size bed there was a sitting area with a comfy couch and a flat screen TV with Dish Network. The walk-in shower and stone counters in the bathroom added to the feel of being in the depths of nature. Real bamboo floors kept our feet cool along with the option of air conditioning (which we didn’t even need, the weather was perfect). Unique sculptures and paintings decorate the walls and further the relaxing atmosphere that Boca de Iguanas is known for. These rooms go for roughly $200 a night depending on the time of year and so on.

Amenities

Eventually we ventured out of our gorgeous room to the beach and pool area. Boca caters to the “West Coast active lifestyle,” and this is seen in the active approach guests take. A good example of this is the fun little trek you get to take from the hotel portion to the beach/restaurant area, a two or three minute walk in total, but the whole way is beautiful. You have to walk through a mangrove tree lined path and over a wide bridge that crosses a small river. At night the path is lit up with strings of lights and candles. In fact, most of the beach is lit up with flickering candles, some 1500 candles are burned every night! Truly a stunning sight. It is personal touches like this that really defines Boca.

We loved the bright blue free form infinity pool and jacuzzi. It is set just about 100 yards off the beach so you get the feel of being on the beach while staying in the comfort of the manicured pool area. Boca can offer you retreat-like peaceful relaxation with expansive sunsets, romantic walks on the soft sand beach, and massages on a hill peak overlooking the ocean. Or it can offer an activity filled sojourn with boogie boarding, surfing, a 50 foot rock climbing wall, bouldering, ocean kayaking, bird watching and jungle hiking where you may run across a fleeting iguana.

Recently they have been having live classical music concerts at the resort as well, staged on a large open lawn with a Spanish Mission in the background, it has proved to be quite a hit with all the visitors!

Service

The service was top notch, with friendly, attentive, and skilled staff. Upon arrival we were greeted with welcoming Margaritas and a healthy serving of chips, salsa, and guacamole. Since there is currently only about 10 rooms and two beach cabanas, it is easy for the staff to know you as more then a room number. You can tell they like where they work and who they work with. It shows through on their smiles and personal attention. That makes us, as patrons, very happy. Room service can be set up one day ahead of time if you want breakfast in bed as there is no in-room communication. Face to face contact with employees is fairly easy since they all speak English very well.

Restaurant and Food

Dining in the elevated palapa covered restaurant was lots of fun. It has a stunning view, airy feel, and a paradise like tone.  The food was an excellent blend of traditional Mexican food and American dishes. Breakfast was made to order and complimentary.  We like the Verde Chilaquiles the best. The coffee was deliciously fresh brewed everytime. We got a peak at the new up and coming menu for dinner and it looks scrumptious! For lunch and dinner we enjoyed the chef’s grilled Shrimp Fajitas, the shrimp quesadillas, as well as the succulent Dorado Fish. It was the best fish I have tasted in Mexico yet! The homemade flour tortillas were a cozy touch, as was the herb garden they personally attend to and use.

At happy hour from 5-6, you must try their signature BDI Margarita. It is made with local tamarind juice and has a unique and lingering flavor you wont forget. After dinner, make sure to head towards the beach bonfire that they light every night. With a Mexican coffee in hand, you can lounge around a crackling fire and marvel at the millions of stars of the Milky Way like you never have before.

Overall

Overall, we give Boca De Iguanas a glowing review and are encouraging our closest friends to take a visit. If you are looking for a fantastic back-to-basics relaxing beach vacation, this is the place to go! Coming from Manzanillo, it is an easy drive and a quick get away.

For any thinking of getting married in Manzanillo, this resort would be absolutely ideal for a beach wedding. It would be even more ideal to live in the luxury condos and real estate they sell next to the hotel. Well, we can always dream! We can’t wait to go there again next year and experience the soon to be opened Alma Wellness Spa and to see what other exciting personal touches they have added.
