Breakfast at El Caballito- Restaurant Review

Submitted by Manzanillo Blogger on Monday, 27 October 200810 Comments

Want a great Sunday morning breakfast with a beautiful atmosphere and delicious food? Try El Caballito’s restaurant. With a cascading waterfall, beautiful sculpture, and paradise-like décor, the scene is set for great dining. The restaurant's name refers to a seahorse, as you can see from the cover of their menu, as well as their mascot statue. They specialize in seafood as so many other places do in this seaside town. However, they also have a noteworthy variety of other entrees to choose from that will delight and excite your tastebuds.

We recently had breakfast here and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Caballito’s waiters are friendly and immaculately dressed. I actually feel bad for them, having to wear tuxedo long sleeve shirts in this heat. So tip well, because they deserve it. Along with some of the most flavorful coffee we've had in Mexico, they bring out the most delicious hot pastry bread and jam. The fresh bread and coffee alone are worth a trip here for a breakfast, you will understand once you try it.

One of their specialty breakfast options is the Crab Machaca. It is a shredded crab in a spicy red sauce with a side of refried beans and rice. Yes it is adventurous, especially for those of us who are not used to having seafood with our coffee. It is actually quite tasty though. Not too fishy, lots of spice. It’s a nice change once in awhile. They also have a full menu of other delicious Mexican breakfast options. For the less adventurous breakfasters, typical gringo foods are available too (i.e. bacon, eggs, pancakes, toast).

We liked pretty much everything about our breakfast at Caballitos. It is easy to easy that others do too. The place was packed on a Monday morning. The prices are a little high, not Vips high, but still a bit expensive. For a treat once in a while, however, it is more than worth it. Parking is a little hard to snag, we suggest parking by El Fogon and walking. The restaurant is located on Miguel de la Madrid (main boulevard) near Soriana between El Fogon and El Gran Mueble.

Tip: When eating for lunch or dinner, be sure to request your free bottle of beer, or glass of house wine. They won't bring it to you unless you ask, but they are happy to oblige once you mention it.

I’ve yet to eat at El Caballito. I’ll have to try their food when I visit Manzanillo in a couple months from now. And great tip, I’ll remember to make that beer request since you say their prices are higher than you would expect.

Your reviews are bringing back great memories. Excellent food, clean, and unless prices have changed, relatively inexpensive. We had 3 beer, 1 coke and lunch for 3 for 60 pesos. Free beer helps keep the cost down. They can handle 2-20+ people. I feel like a burrito, NOW!

It is always interesting the difference in perception of the same restaurant. For several years my wife, another couple and I spend several weeks in Manzanillo. Of the many restaurants we frequent, El Caballito was always a must visit until our last two visits. In November and again two weeks ago, we found the service to be horrible. The quality of the food remains good, but it took forever to arrive at the table though there were only two other couples there. El Fagon, El Vaccaro, and Pedros Cosuela Grill at Miramar are terrific at any time of the year.

You know, I would have to agree. It was nice for a lazy morning breakfast, but you certainly can’t eat there in a rush. I agree with your recommendations as well!
