Cinepolis- Manzanillo’s Movie Theater

Submitted by Manzanillo Blogger on Wednesday, 3 September 20082 Comments

Desperation for the familiar is a common ailment among transplants. Living in in a foreign country is wonderful and a constant adventure, but there are times when every person may feel desperate on some subconscious level for a taste of home. At times like these there is no better remedy than the taste of buttery delicious popcorn, an oversized cup of soda, and a mindless movie. Manzanillo offers an opportunity for this at the movie theater called Cinepolis. It is located on the far right side of the Soriana shopping center.

We have been very impressed with this theater. It is actually nicer and cleaner then the majority of the theaters we’ve been to in the US. Cinepolis is fairly new so it is squeaky clean and very comfortable. It is air conditioned, the seats are big and soft, and there are your standard ridiculous sized cup holders. The sound is great and the picture is clear. Prices are exceptional at 45 pesos per ticket. We love the popcorn. It comes in buttered, light butter, enchilada, and caramel! Forget the overpriced concession stands, a large popcorn here will run you about 20 or so pesos. There are two types of showings; dubbed Spanish voices dubbed in place of the actors, and Subtitled- normal English spoken by actors with Spanish subtitles.

One problem we have been encountering within the last couple months is the over abundance of Spanish dubbed movies. Usually there was a subtitled showing for a lot of movies. Now they are far and in between. “Hey that’s fair for the Mexicans” you may say. However, many of our local friends whose native language is Spanish, are really annoyed at this latest change. They complain that it loses the character and emotion of the movie, many times phrases are changed, and that they enjoyed listening to the English and picking up words. Of course, we miss it too. Hopefully the subtitled showings will return! In that case, you can find movie times on this site (remember to check if it is subtitled or dubbed): http://www.cinepolis.com.mx/indexmx.asp

    WHAT?! Your popcorn is salty?

I want a refund. It’s always sweet here. And the worst thing, the worst thing? Sweet and salty popcorn smell about the same, so you always forget that it’s sweet. Bleck.

    Keep ‘em coming!
