Alaska Airlines
As you may already know we recently returned from vacation. Which is why the postings have been a little less regular lately. We flew Alaska Airlines from Puerto Vallarta and were very very impressed. We really can’t say enough good things about Alaska Airlines. After using them a couple of times, we are pretty sure they are among our favorite airline companies ever. How often can you say you actually enjoyed your airport and airplane experience? Not very often is the likely answer. Alaska Airlines seems to be the exception to the rule. Every time we have flown them, the crew has been friendly, the food yummy, the flights comfortable, the ticketing process painless, and most important the planes have been ON TIME! (gasp! ‘On time’ you say? Yes on time. Our last two flights even landed early!)
They fly direct from California to Puerto Vallarta. To Manzanillo there is no direct flight as of yet, but the change over is not too bad. This company seems to enjoy being kind to their customers. An oddity for an airline. If you’ve got an Alaska Airlines card you get miles for your purchases, a free ticket for signing up, and you also get one ticket a year for $50! I don’t think any other airline offers something like that. I swear they didn't pay us to write this, we were just genuinely impressed with the quality of service.
Our only gripe is that when flying out of Manzanillo or Puerto Vallarta you are only allowed one checked bag per person now. There is $25 USD charge for the second bag. This is a less than impressive way for the airlines to generate a little more revenue. The good news is if you fly out of Guadalajara you are allowed two at no additional cost. So be aware of that if you are planning a flight soon.

Agree completely Alaska is terrific! Good news - they offer non-stop service between LAX - ZLO, everyday except Monday during high season. During the Summer, they have only Saturday flights, but they’re direct.
I love the food with alaska. mmm crackers and salami. Not to mention free starbucks.
I too can vouch for Alaska Airlines. My only quibble is that while their in flight magazine said they accepted Mexican currency, in reality they did not and showing the staff their written words did nothing to sway them……… Pack some US cash if you want to purchase drinks or snacks.
At least I don’t have to disrobe to get on a plane in Mexico!
If only we could get flights going between PV and ZLO we could fly direct into PV on cheap deal off season and puddle jumper over to ZLO…now that would rock!

That would be awesome. Right now the best way to get from PV to Manzanillo is to take a bus. I wrote an article on it, it’s not too bad considering the price difference (my experience was a unusually bad as you will read).
Anyway here is the article: Bus Travel in Mexico and My New Super Power
You know the people who have never ridden on a Mexican bus…they are sitting at the front thinking they will enjoy the sights, learned riders are at the back with blind folds on

I like Alaska Airlines too. Just found out a way to “beat” the luggage charge. If you fly into or out of Guadalajara or Mexico City on Alaska you can have two checked bags at not cost. The third incurs a charge. The flight from Guadalajara to LA gets you in at 7:00 in the morning (due to the time change) which allows you to have a full day in LA instead of arriving really late from Manzanillo.
We are considering trying it out with our next trip. The ETN bus even goes direct from Manzanillo to the Guadalajara airport. It may be a reasonable alternative. Sometime the fares are considerably cheaper going into and out of Guadalajara. Not all the time. So it may be worth checking out.
