Starbucks Coming To Manzanillo, The Empire Has Arrived…
We were just driving today and noticed a new sign announcing that Starbucks will be coming to Manzanillo soon. They are already hiring. I did a quick web search and found an employment notice posted for Manzanillo's new Starbucks Here. The new Starbucks will be located across from the Walmart, directly next to KFC... I've got to ask, what is happening to Mexico? There are places in the US where they don't have a Walmart, KFC, and Starbucks. Ok ok, I haven't seen any personally, but I know places like that must exist.
Regardless, yes it's true, the Empire has come to Manzanillo. Now you can have your tall, double whip, no sugar, low fat, caramel mocha frappuccino as you relax on the beach. I wonder how it would go with a side of fresh ceviche?
What are your thoughts? Starbucks in Manzanillo, good or bad?
*Update 9/17/08- Sign on Starbucks says it will be opening on September 26th. It is further along in the construction stages now and it definitely looks like your traditional Starbucks. Hope they have free coffee on opening day! The construction behind the Starbucks is rumored to be of a new shopping mall and an Office Depot.
*Update 10/05/08- As I'm sure most of you know Starbucks is here now. They put up their beautiful building in record time. It looks like any Starbucks that you would see in the States. They have a nice open area outside to sit and drink your coffee, as long as you don't mind roasting in the sun (Maybe not a lot of forthought there). Also just behind Starbucks is a sewage treatment plant. As you can imagine, the smell doesn't compliment the coffee very well. Sitting outside of Starubucks is not for the faint of heart.
Also, there are signs up for a new Darie Queen, and an OfficeDepot. A reliable source states that in this new shopping center will be a Chili's as well. Susan over at GoManzanillo says they are planning on building a Sams Club as well within the year. A Home Depot is also rumored to be in the works on Av. De Las Garzas. Looks like Manzanillo is going to be turning into a mini Puerto Vallarta before long.

Seems like there’s nowhere in the world you can go these days without finding a Starbucks. Whatever else they are, they certainly have a formula for success.
They continue to develop Salagua. I live in Santiago, let it all stay down there! I didn’t pay $4 for a cup of coffee when I lived in the US and I’m sure as heck not going to pay $40 pesos here. Not only that, but with all of the licuado places who cares about Starbucks?
YAY!!! Starbucks is ALWAYS good!!! YAY YAY YAY.
You know.. I’m looking forward to the day when i can say.. hey let’s go to the beach and on your way could you grab me a grande vanilla breve starbucks double shot on ice? Thanks your a doll.
Every morning when I was working. Can’t imagine one mid-day. I’ve even gotten used to Nescafe. A Starbucks just means we’re a step closer to a Costco or Homedepot
I am just getting use to a Wal Mart. I thought you said Manzanillo was a sleepy little mexican town. But now a Starbucks. Where people don’t have enough money to put rice and tortillas on their table. Where’s the justice! I only see the USA wring out more money from the poor giving to the rich!
sales@ciderbloc
Isnt that the case! $4 for a cup of coffee is almost half a days wage for many here. There really is no justice. Living in Mexico truly opens ones eyes to what’s important in life.
In the end, its each person’s decision to buy from Starbucks or not. What I do see as a problem though is Starbucks taking business away from places like Costeños.
wow…then what’s next? mcdoanld’s?
the salagua-boulevard strip is really starting to look like a micro-sized mexican city with america’s most popular chains like kfc and wal-mart. on a personal note, i prefer local cafés like “coffe max” anytime! i think all these american chains (some are great like wal-mart) takes away the mexican appeal, especially in a small town like manzanillo, a nice cozy place that’s supposed to be magical by making you forget about all the things that big cities have…well, NOT ANYMORE!
I personally believe Starbuck’s is not a good sign. I would like to see the indigenous folks that grow coffee up in the hills open a cafe. Supporting the local and regional growers is what will help Mexico…not corporate America. Also the carbon footprint of Starbuck’s is far from impressive. Think about how they get all those coffees from all over the world to all their stores. Support your local farmers and regional growers. This will help maintain the culture we all have learned to love. OK…I’m getting off my soap box now.
Also I had to giggled at the comment that Manzanillo was a sleepy little town. I live about an hour north and consider Manzanillo the big city! I guess everything is relative.
All the Mexicans will love it. Some may not be able to afford it. Some Americans say is not good for Manzanillo cuz is getting more PV style. I think they do love it on the very inside (they are the ones that consume it the most) If they don’t then just don’t support it, don’t buy it. I think is cool. More competition gives better quality to the final consumer. Also make the other coffee shops to improve their pots .If they don’t they will have to go. Larga Vida Starbucks!
I guess all is relative…I grew up smack in the middle of Orange County (Costa Mesa, N.P. Beach, Hunt. Beach), where you find a Strbks on every corner, and to me this is great news. This place will bring many memories back…dates,, study nights, long conversations, warm chocolate to mend a broken heart or after a day of Christmas shopping, a nice cup of coffee the morning after a Friday or Saturday night in the wonderful L.A. or Long Beach clubs. I love the idea, it was part of my life style and I am so happy to have a little bit of home here in Manzanillo.
hopefully coffe max and el costeño will still have good business after a few years from now. it also depends how well starbucks will do. let’s all rememeber what happened to vips…
one thing for sure, at least in it’s grand openning day it’ll hit huge! i can imagine starbucks being totally packed!
p.s. the only new chains i’ve really enjoyed is wal-mart & subway. i wonder when will they bring a mc donald’s?
People keeps talkin about a Samborns, Costco, Mc Donalds and for sure Office Depot is comin. So lots of new things for manzanillo.
Manzanillo sure has changed quite a bit in the past few years. I think everyone agrees that it is much easier to live here now than it was twenty years ago. I guess whether we like it or not change happens. With how popular a destination Manzanillo is becoming I’m sure we are going to see many more changes coming our way soon.
that’s great overall, cause there are changes that has got to be made, but i’m hoping that they will construct better hospitals and schools. lately it’s all about fast food and new shopping centers. there are still alot of things to fix in various neighborhoods, and traffic lights are much NEEDED on that walmart street and that street where they have the fish factory and that telmex building! speed limit signs would also be great too guys!
According to people in Santiago, McDonalds is coming to Santiago.
It will be built where the Vivero was across from Centro in the treed
lot just north of the where the Tianguis are held.
The good news is that I can walk from my house to Centro Santiago
without seeing it if it is actually built.
wow, i never knew i would see the day where a mcdonalds would possibly be built in santiago.
that’s kinda good and scary at the same time….
at least it’ll attract more tourists i guess.
I don’t really have an opinion on Starbucks I’ve never been to one before and can’t see starting to go now. However I see there is also a Dairy Queen sign hanging out there as well, now on those really hot days I could go for a Blizzard and some brain freeze!
I wonder as well if Manzanillo will ever see a Home Depot?I’m not one for chain stores, but they certainly have a great selection and prices. I’ve heard that there will be a Home Depot built in Colima by Jan or Feb,That’s close enough for me beets going to Guadalajara to buy a reasonably priced BBQ.
I am disappointed to see all these American stores and fast food chains. It is taking way part of the sleepy charm of Manzanillo.
i personally think that most of these american chains are very expensive in manzanillo.
alot of people are afraid that it might convert mzlo into pv, that may or may not be true to a certain degree. for one, they bring in the chains, but they’re not an exact pv replica of that chain. the walmart we have here is less than half the size of the supercenters i’ve seen and been in before. the service in fast food isn’t always fast, so yes, we may have the chains, but we’re far behind pv.
in the end, manzanillo still is a small pueblo like city.
As I do not go to Starbucks in the US why would I in Mexico? I am a firm believe in supporting local businesses. In Oakland we have lots of independent coffee houses but my favorites are the Coffee Mill on Lake shore. Great food & better coffee. Also Gaylord’s on Piedmont. Free WiFi. So if in town stop in.
NOT happy to see Starbucks. Except for the raised awareness for quality coffee and roasts.
If you look at the history of this mega-business and the impact it has… you might find out that times it actually increases business for the small guys.
Why? Because the focus is brought back to “good-coffee” and the proper preperation, including quality. So more folks then look for equivalent options.
I personally will continue to support Costeno’s and the sort as long as their quality is what it is today. Coffee is like wine… everyone likes something different. A good Roast to me is a horrible one to you.

Thanks Coffequeen for that information! I didn’t realize that about Starbucks. I’m sill a fan of the little cafe in Walmart. The girl there grinds the espresso right there in front of you and lavishes quite a bit of care in making you a good cup of coffee. So far it’s been the best cafe I’ve found. Starbucks notwithstanding.
Have you guys notice the smell outside Starbucks as well? It can be downright rank. Hope that gets fixed. We’d also like to see a palapa and some fans over the outside patio area. Give it a little more Mexican feel, and also make it wayyy more bearable.
I’m working on getting a coupon for our readers to get a free cup of coffee at Starbucks. They’ve been handing them out at the traffic lights lately in town. Maybe I can get one for all of our subscribers. No matter how you feel about Starbucks, a free cup of coffee is a free cup of coffee!
please do uas the favor mzlo blogger! i’m also with you when it comes to the cofee they serve at walmart. it’s the best they have in town and their expresso was real good too! for anyone one that’s a fan of coffee max, they’re gonna place their coffe shop in a bigger local. i’m looking foward into seeing that one done.
it’s great news that they’ll bring chilli’s here, they serve some of the best huge burgers i’ve had in a long time (besides the one they had in manzagrillo on manzanillo centro).
starbucks might not be that bad after all… because we’re all talking about coffee.
I recently visited Manzanillo and found nothing left wanting, my hotel was a block away from Wal-Mart, 2 from Starbucks, 3 from KFC and 4 from Burger King (approx). After all was said and done and my wife and I learned the ways of the force (Manzanillo Blogger) we ended up walking what i think is at least 2-3 miles for a Juanito’s Burger (mid day), and we’d do it again and again. So even though the Big Boys are in town don’t think that the local guys don’t still reign supreme, convenience over quality… give me the local flavor. :p

Canuckeh, as much as I like Starbucks, I think you’re right on this one. Just cause we have a starbucks (and whatever comes up next), doesn’t mean most of us won’t continue to cherish the local café’s, resteraunts, groceries and mercados. We’re so lucky to live in a town that has a hardware store in just about every corner! Who needs Lowe’s? The same I think ’bout Office Max & Depot… we have alot of papelerias around town to take care of us!
p.s. Try out the Soriana cheese burger at least once, if it’s not to your liking, at least it beats the cold, frozen & expensive burgers served at bk! If you’re in a mood for good mexican food, visit Santiago down town and try out Taco’s Julio’s! They serve great nachos!
BCBUD wrote about wishing for a Home Depot to arrive here in Mz so he can buy a reasonably priced BBQ.
Previous to opening our Weber store here in Mz (1 1/2 blocks past the Burger King), my wife and I spent a year living in Punta de Mita, about a 45 minute drive from the Home Depot in Puerto Vallarta. Yes, they do sell cheap BBQ´s…and I do mean cheap (as in cheaply made). It is questionable as to whether you´re saving any money by purchasing one, because they simply don´t last.
It has become apparent to us that many are sensitive to the higher prices that a high quality product like Weber has, but I think there are many things that these folks do not consider before completely disqualifying a Weber as their grill of choice in Mexico.
Like over 2,000 other product categories, BBQ´s are subjected to the NOM (Norma Oficial Mexicana) certification process. This is simular to CSA and UL standards for acceptance in the US and Canada, but is unique and specific to products imported into Mexico. Each model must be NOM certified, and each product must be re-certified once a year. The importer must be a Mexican company, and is responsible for warranty, maintenance and product liability of the products. From this, you can perhaps see why there is a very limited selection of grill manufacturers represented in Mexico (that is, Weber and Ducane, which is a subsiduary of Weber).
I have had several people drop by the store looking for a variety of parts for their grills either brought down from the US or Canada, or sometimes purchased in larger Mexican cities. Each time there is no clear answer to acquiring parts, except to get them from where ever the grill originally came from (because, quite simply, you are not likely going to find them here in Mexico).
To our knowledge, Weber is the only brand of BBQ in Mexico (other than in the free-zone states (Baja & Sonora) that actually has a distributor (in Guadalajara), actually warehouses and distributes the product (from their Mexico City warehouses), actually inventories spare parts for models flagged for and sold in Mexico, and actually warranties the product for consumers here in Mexico (up to 25 years guarantee against rusting). Taking into consideration all of the overhead associated with complying with Mexican importation law, transportation costs and establishment of the distribution channel, you should be able to understand why Weber products are more expensive here than in the continental US or Canada (from a google search, I found Webers are cheaper here than in Hawaii).
I believe there is a solution available to budget consciencious consumers within the Weber product family. Simply back off a bit on the number of features you think you need, and I think you might find a Weber model that´s right for you (charcoal grills start at $623 pesos; gas grills start at $2,495 pesos). You will get many years of excellent performance from these products, and you will get the service you need when you need it.
Everytime you light up your grill and make some tremendous food, you´ll be glad you have it, and the pain of the higher price you paid will eventually simply slip away.
And, the best burger in Manzanillo will be the one that you cook on your Weber at home.
Starbucks is not my favorite cup of java. But I think they usually have a positive effect on the areas they move into. They raise the bar and introduce more people to the coffee culture.
I also don’t think Starbucks will hurt existing places like Coffee Max’s business. I believe it will help Coffee Max as they make a good cup. I am looking forward to seeing more little coffee shops open as the caffeine culture spreads.

Starbucks rocks! plus is great for business. I have found so many clients for real estate and also my airline tickets,i get 20% off in any airfare to any-part of the world aka. canader, usa, europe etc.
so people, Don’t Hate The Playa,Hate The Game.
reply to: Travel Mexico Cheaply- Less Than $45 A Day | Manzanillo Mexico Blog
it’s actually more expensive to eat at those places compared to the states.
ridiculous isn’t it! Now, if we could get a Taco Bell or Jack In The Box down here… that’d be another story. But one can dream. (I know, I know. I can’t help it)
y’know, despite how negative most fast food establishments may be, it just shows that manzanillo is now a popular tourists destination. this city has grown alot. in the past i don’t think the town would’ve managed a starbucks, would they? it’s hard to say.
people now are getting used to all thsese additions with stores like office depot and walmart. love it or hate it, now the people of manzanillo have more options to dine out (i wouldn’t call “fast food” dining out but…. there are people in there wearing fancy clothes and paying for the food with credit cards…) and to shop.
i find office depot to be quite awesome, why it has all you need (office related) without the hassle to shop at several papelerías anymore. if i want to do groceries, i now have 3 supermarkets to shop instead of just 1.
in the old days, no one really ever heard of manzanillo, now with site’s like this one, anybody can goggle mexico blog, and “manzanillo blog” will probably show up in an instead. one click away and newcomers will get to know all the best things manzanillo has to offer.
of course i have my concerns of how “big” manzanillo will become, but then again, why worry? there’s really nothing we can do about. manzanillo is still very maexican at heart, and i seriously doubt a holiday inn will change that.
My husband and I have recently bought a place in Manzanillo and are re-doing it. We bought because we have friends who live in La Punta and we visited them on several occasions. We love Manzanillo—-AS IT WAS WHEN WE FIRST VISITED—which was only 5 years ago—no American business whatsoever—now, Burger King, Starbucks, WALmart, (from what I hear) Sam’s Club coming, etc. I, as a Canadian, will not support the big American Corp. coming in to try and overtake local business—it is BS!!! GO AWAY!!!! We who come here enjoy NOT having American business in our face!! Let the peoople who originate from here flourish!…not allow BIG BOX AMERICA TO GET AWAY WITH IT!!!!!
You can just envision what these big corps have in store for Manzanillo…conveniences are great, but not at the expense of the locals trying to make a living…I agree Monique.
Having stayed in La Punta, I found I was so sheltered from town and I couldn’t wait to hike down the hill to hit the street and just walk and explore.
