Local Restaurant Spotlight: Snack Ar
Family owned restaurants exude a certain warmth and heartiness. “Snack Ar” is about as “mom and pop” as it gets. Despite the awkward name (No we didn’t forget to add “B”to the “Ar” in the name), this place has got the stuff great little restaurants are made of.
As we came in for lunch, we were eagerly greeted with smiles from the family and given magazines to peruse while waiting for our drinks. Our waiter gave us their daily verbal only menu. A little Spanish is necessary to eat here since the menu is not written down and not much English is spoken. We decided to try each of the 4 items and we were not disappointed!
Pepino water is the drink that was served, and actually is better then it sounds believe it or not. Pepino is a cucumber. It makes for a delightfully refreshing and cooling drink. The best part is the cucumber water washes all the spiciness away when you drink it. With the meals came a soup comprised of a light tasty broth with star noodles. While it sounds simple, the flavor is surprisingly complex.
One main course we really enjoyed was a tender cooked chicken breast with green sauce, refried beans, and a unique Mexican version of fried noodles or chow mein. It was outstanding. Other delicious main courses included Flautas and the Carne Asada Plate.
We were too full and happy to try dessert, so we stopped there.
4 people, 4 meals, 4 drinks, 4 soups and the meal came out to under $20 USD. Wow! We often don’t find this quality when paying 4 times this amount. The service and the comfortable environment made this a unique and fun dining experience. You may find it a bit of an adventure to find the place, since it is tucked quietly in a neighborhood. Try these directions- Head down the main boulevard Miguel de la Madrid towards Soriana. Turn on the side street of Soriana where the little souvenir market is. Take this down a ways until you see a large red “Sharp” sign and turn left. It will be a few streets up on your left.
